40 million people are living with HIV/AIDS today, and Africa is worst affected. Only in South Africa 4.2 million people are carrying the virus. HIV is short for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It is a virus spread by intercourse, blood and also from a mother to her child by pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. It destroys the white blood cells in the blood and this allows the immune system to deteriorate. In case of infection, the symptoms that arise are for example pain in the throat, fever or swollen lymph glands in the armpits or neck. The symptoms last for a few weeks and after that you can be without symptoms for years. But the person can still bring the disease further. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS, wich is short for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is a deadly disease that destroys the body's immune defense against diseases completely. This means that people who have AIDS can catch many different diseases that healthy persons normally would be able to defend themselves against.
