Anne of Green Gables is a great novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. Since its publication in 1908, the book has been an enduring bestseller and arguably Canada's most famous novel.
This book tells the story of Anne Shirley, an orphan who goes to Canada's Prince Edward Island to live with Marilla Cuthbert and her brother Matthew on their farm - Green Gables. They decide to adopt a boy from an orphan asylum in Nova Scotia as a helper on the farm.
Lucy Maud Montgomery's novel Anne of Green Gables begins with a general astonishment. First of all surprised is Mrs Linde, that Cuthberts, people who don't have a clue about raising children, decide to adopt a boy. Much more surprised are Matthew and Marilla, when they meet red-haired and freckled girl instead of the expected boy. In this way – unexpectedly and amazingly - Anne Shirley enters into the life of two old people and radically changes it.
The girl is the main character in the book. Her parents died of fever when she was an infant and she long dreamed of finding a real home and a real family.
