Pretending to be someone you are not is not an uncommon thing among high school students. Some do it as an attempt to fit in, others for other reasons. There are various explanations as to why teens have double personalities and Joyce Carol Oates's ‘Big Mouth and Ugly Girl' explores this subject.
Ursula Riggs comes off as a confident teenager with a quick wit and determination. However there is a side to Ursula that she does not very keenly show off. Despite her efforts to make it seem like Ugly Girl, her other personality, does not let people's disapproval, opinions and whispers about her make an impact, it does affect Ursula Riggs. For example, when Ursula does not make the foul shot and everyone thinks she did it on purpose she runs away to hide in the locker-room: ‘'I had fled the gym. The sullen hateful faces.'' (p. 19).
