The theme of illness, in John Green's novel The Fault in Our Stars, is one of the main components of the story. The two main characters, Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters, has their illness in common, it has shaped their personalities and attitudes, therefore also the reader's perspective on the plot.
Hazel Grace Lancaster, the main protagonist and narrator or the novel, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at a very young age and this has affected her life severely. She has been forced to carry around an oxygen tank to be able to breath, which has restricted her capability to move and be active like others around her, for example not allowing her to participate in sports and causing medical issues in school.
