“Brokeback Mountain” by Annie Proulx begins with Ennis, who wakes up in his trailer after dreaming about Jack Twist. He thinks about the days when he and Jack were young, spending time on a mountain.

Jack and Ennis were born and raised at opposite sides of the same state. They meet when they are less than 20 years old when they both get a job, herding some sheep on Brokeback Mountain. During the summer they spend working together, they begin a sexual relationship, although both deny being gay. They think nobody knows what they are doing, but their employer, Joe Aguirre, spies on them with his binoculars.  

When the summer ends, Ennis punches Jack, but they part ways as friends. On the road back, Ennis feels sick. He goes on to marry his fiancée Alma, with whom he has two daughters. Four years later, Jack writes him a letter and comes to visit him. Alma sees them kissing, but they all pretend that nothing has happened. Ennis and Jack go to a motel. There, Jack...
