The short story “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence also explores the theme of luck. In “Dip in the Pool” luck is presented through gambling at a cruise ship auction and through Botibol’s desperate attempts to change his fortune. In “The Rocking-Horse Winner” the theme of luck is explored through horse-betting and the opposing views of the main character and his mother on what luck means. In both stories, the main characters seek luck that will bring them wealth and end up dying because of their desperate efforts to get money.

The theme of luck and greed is also explored in the short story “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs. Similarly to “Dip in the Pool”, “The Monkey’s Paw” shows how attempting to interfere with fate can have disastrous consequences, and achieving material wealth is useless if it comes at the expense of someone’s life.
