Choice of title

When talking about his novel Holes on his home page, Louis Sachar admits he was not one hundred percent satisfied with his choice: "I'm not always sure about the title - I didn't think Holes was a very good title." The other shortlisted title was Wrong Time, Wrong Place, Wrong Kid.

Why Holes?

Despite the author's initial reservations, however, Holes is in many ways an appropriate title for the story of Stanley Yelnats at Camp Green Lake. In all three parts of the novel, holes determine the plot to a very considerable extent (see the section on "Structure"). In the most obvious sense, Holes describes the activity that the juvenile inmates at Camp Green Lake must perform day in and day out: digging holes.
