Summary
The play Othello by William Shakespeare begins with Iago and Roderigo plotting against the Moorish general Othello. Iago hates Othello because Othello has promoted Cassio to lieutenant and not him. Roderigo, meanwhile, is distressed because Desdemona, a woman he wanted to marry has run away from her family and secretly married Othello.
Iago and Roderigo go to Senator Brabantio, Desdemona’s father, and tell him that Othello and Desdemona have eloped. Brabantio accuses Othello in front of the Duke of Venice of seducing his daughter using witchcraft. However, when the Duke calls Desdemona, she insists that she loves Othello and considers him her husband.
