DeVante

DeVante is a young man who has recently become a member of King’s gang, the King Lords. He only plays a minor role in the early chapters of The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. However, he becomes more important when he seeks out Maverick and asks for protection against King’s gang, as he does not want to commit the murders that King has ordered him to commit (Chapter 10, 62%). 

Much like Khalil, we generally get the impression that DeVante is basically a decent young man who has gotten involved with the wrong crowd and now feels trapped. However, he is also a bit dishonest about his intentions, as he lets Maverick believe that he is only hiding from King because he does not want to become a killer.
