Chapter 1 

The first chapter of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird introduces the narrator, a young girl named Jean Louise Finch, nicknamed Scout. She lives with her widowed lawyer father Atticus, her older brother Jem, and their Black cook Calpurnia in the town of Maycomb, Alabama. 

Scout thinks about the events leading up to the time when Jem got his arm badly broken. When Scout is nearly six and Jem nearly ten, a boy nicknamed Dill moves in on their street for the summer and becomes their friend. Dill decides they should try to make Boo Radley, their mysterious neighbor, come out of his house. 

Boo Radley had not been seen outside of his house in years, ever since he got in trouble with the law when he was young and then nearly sent to an asylum. As a result, Boo’s father confined Boo to his house, and after his father’s passing, Boo’s older brother, Nathan Radley, came to stay with Boo. 

The kids are fascinated but also scared by the mysterious Radleys. Dill dares Jem to touch the Radley’s house, which he eventually does, but no one comes out. However, the kids think they see a window shutter move slightly, as though someone was peeking out.
